Since transplants first started to make the mainstream in the late 1980’s, the advances in the results that can be achieved have been profound. Likewise, equipment has improved to the point where surgeons are able to work at the microscopic level, removing individual follicular units with absolute precision.
The evolution of this equipment has enabled good surgeons to deliver incredible results. With a lot of surgeons now concentrating not only on the follicle extraction and implantation but also achieving a barely visible scar.
The treatment works by removing hair follicles from the rear section of the head and preparing them under a microscope before being precisely re-implanted into the area that is causing the client concern.
There are two main types of transplant FUE & FUT.
FUE is a harvesting technique where the individual follicles are taken out from a shaved area of the donor scalp usually at the rear and sides sections of the head.
The scars that are produced from this method are usually very subtle dots scattered over a large area. This makes it possible to conceal relatively easily. Scalp Micropigmentation can also be added to the treatment to conceal the scars. This is normally the favoured treatment for people who wear their hair short at the back and sides.
The steps taken for both treatments are very similar and start with the initial contact followed by a consultation. At the consultation the representative for the clinic will discuss the amount of follicular grafts (extractions) and the amount of sessions required.
Once agreed and when you are happy to go ahead, on the day you will be given a local anaesthetic in the areas that will be worked on. Very similar to the anaesthetic you would receive for a minor operation or dental appointment.
Once the treatment is completed you are left with a series of small dots at the rear and side of the head. The whole treatment should be done in a clinic setting that is both sterile and hygienic.
With FUE transplants it is important to take care as they can sometimes be more difficult to take to their new scalp area. Aside from this the only real aftercare is not driving home straight after the treatment!
FUT is the technique originally used for hair transplants. A thin strip of skin taken from the donor area at the back of the head. The transplant technicians then work to harvest the hair follicles from the skin using state of the art microscopes.
Unlike FUE, FUT is ideal for patients suffering from advanced hair loss who require large amounts of implants (grafts). Again, all of this should be discussed at the consultation stage which is where your treatment will start.
On the day of the treatment anaesthetic is given and sometimes up to 5000 grafts can be implanted in just one session.
A good surgeon will be able to implant the hair follicles in and around the existing hair to give a seamless blend. As stated above this treatment is more suited for people with extreme hair loss and maybe has slightly longer hair at the back to cover the scar. Having said that, the scars are getting better and better all the time in terms of concealment.
